Protein and Hot Dogs

Protein is all the rage these days.  A walk down the supermarket aisles finds "Protein" written in large letters on many product.  Even Dunkin doughnuts and Starbucks are offering protein options.

The new USDA Dietary Guidelines urge Americans to “prioritize Protein at Every Meal,” upping the recommended daily protein intake from 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram per day to 1.2-1.6.  For a 220 adult that means eating between 120 to 160 grams of protein a day.  For me at 246 pounds, that means to 134-179 grams a day.  That’s a lot of protein.

Protein is particularly important if you are combining it with strength training.  You need the protein to sustain and add muscle.

So how much protein is in a hot dog?  An Oscar Meyer Weiner comes in at 5 grams of protein.  A Hebrew National All Beef Dog is 6.  A Martin Rosol dog is 10, A Mucke all beef dog provides 17.

Don’t expect to get all your daily protein from hot dogs.  You need to get protein from multiple sources, both animal (eggs, chicken, seafood, red meat) and plant (beans, peas, nuts and seeds, legumes).

A hot dog at the end of the day may get you where you over the top.
