Twins

Rich and I had a meeting at the UCONN Fire Department in Storrs, Connecticut about a forty minute drive from the hospital where we work.  Rich has a nicer car than mine so he always volunteers to drive.  We always have nice talks on the way, except when we are being interrupted. Rich is the kind of friend/doctor who gives everyone his home phone number and tells them to call if there is ever an emergency.  He has a lot of friends so he is constantly getting calls.  Some of them start out like this.  “I’ve got this rash…”  I laugh about it, but I have called him a few times myself and he is always helpful.

On this drive was talk about the controversial Saturday Night Live monologue by Shane Gillis.  In the monologue Gillis talks about women dressing scantily in the gym.  He uses a derogatory name to categorize them.  The monologue is a reference to a Instagram trend where women wear skimpy dress while they lift and they secretly film other gym goes drawing at them and then they sham them.  Gillis has even filmed such a skit in his sitcom, Tires, where he is caught gawking at a girl, by her boyfriend who is filming and then shaming the procession of people gawking at her.  He responds in a chauvinistic way to the boy friend, first complimenting him on having such an attractive girlfriend and then saying if he had one who looked like that he would keep her more clothed, including weaning a burka. His monologue is okay, not as funny as the two Saturday live skits he did in the past: the where he goes to the doctor and gets a prescription for “Acoupleofbeers” for his depression or the one where he and his family attend a church service in Jamaica --a favorite in my family. My wife rolled off the couch laughing so hard at that one.  But the point of it all is a discussion of cancel culture and when does humor go to far. The New York Times wrote a story about it, and like a fool, I read the comments and fell again into the hate infested waters of the two extremes yelling at each other.

I tell Rich then about the entry I wrote in my diary about the little hot dog man that lives in my stomach who is always bitching to me about doing planks and working out too hard, and particularly about the nasty tobacco dog I had back on day 70.  I mention that the dog has been after me to go back to Nicki’s Dog house and get another Mexicali dog, and not just one but she if the dog has a sister .  He wants two dogs.  He promised me he would stop bitching should I arrange that.  I tell this to Rich and wonder if maybe if I write about getting him two Mexicali sister hot dogs to keep him company, I might offend someone.  Could I be canceled for this? Even though when I think about the little hot dog man in my belly, for all his bitching, he does crack me up.

This is all relevant as we are head toward Storrs.  Nicki’s Dog is in Storrs and Nicki’s is where we plan to grab coupe dogs before our meeting.

What do  I order?  Do I stay away from the Mexicali Dog for political correctness and face the wrath of the dude dog in my stomach (he really needs a name)?  Do I just get one? Or do I go for it all and get the twins?

I got the twins.  Let the controversy begin!  Day 89. All publicity is good publicity.
