Hot Dogs and Chronic Disease Study

2 Hot Dogs or 1 Large Cookie? A Study of Risks by Amount of Ultraprocessed Food

— Mounting observational evidence links ultraprocessed food with heart disease, cancer, death

51 studies involving over 8 million participants were reviewed.  Every 100 grams of ultraprocessed foods consumed daily led to increased risk of chronic disease.  100 grams is the equivalent of 2 hot dogs.

Yet, later in the article, this important nugget is revealed.  “The idea that these foods directly cause chronic illness is unproven.”

The point being it may not be the hot dogs causing the health risks, it could be the stress full lives style of people who are forced to grab their meals at 7-11 or boil quick hot dog at home after a late night shift of a second job.

Here’s a quote from a statistician, Adam Jacobs:

"People who consume low amounts of UPF are generally more affluent than those who consume more UPF, and we know that poverty is one of the strongest predictors of poor health. So it is possible that UPF consumption is simply a marker for poverty, rather than being harmful per se. There are other possible confounding variables to consider, to do with lifestyle. For example, people doing shift work or with particularly stressful lives may eat more UPF."

Bottom Line:  If the dogs bring you joy, keep eating them.
